Where is the Multimedia Composition program taught at JAMU?

 The Multimedia Composition study program is taught at the Composition, Conducting, and Opera Directing Department. This multidisciplinary department prepares future composers not only for the “craft” itself but also for the close co-operation with multimedia creators, conductors, choral directors, opera directors, and audio engineers. 

What can be multimedia work?

Performance, happening, sonic object, interactive installation, net art, interactive video projection, but also opera, computer game, documentary, video clip, and many others. The only condition is the meaningful use of multiple media within a single work.   

Which faculties co-operate with the department?

The studies in this program are based on the cooperation of four faculties: Faculty of Music and Theatre Faculty JAMUFaculty of Arts of Masaryk University in Brno and Faculty of Fine Arts of the Brno University of Technology. Each offers a specific set of courses for teaching this field.

What equipment can the students use in their lessons?

 JAMU offers state-of-the-art equipment that is suitable for both demonstrative teaching and experimentation. These include the conversion of visual, haptic and other parameters into sound, the realisation of graphic scores, research into micro-interval tuning, interactive electronic systems, the use of multi-channel reproduction or compositional integration of ambient sound recordings (field recording, etc.). The students will also collaborate with the National Theatre Brno and other institutions (including foreign ones, such as the Institute of Sonology in Den Haag) and have the opportunity to practice in our own recording studios.

  • as multimedia specialists or new media dramaturges in all types of theatres, art agencies, multimedia art festivals, etc.;
  • as teachers at all levels of music education (primary art school, conservatory, higher education institution) in various subjects.

What should an applicant prepare for the entrance examination?

An important part of the entrance examination is the demonstration of homework, i.e. portfolios, scores, recordings, performance and concert recordings, photo documentation, graphic and artistic work, online realization in digital folders with complete HTML or Flash files, etc., with a maximum of 20 items in the folder and on CD or DVD, or audio CD or video CD. At the entrance examination, the applicant will be asked to perform a practical visual demonstration. Details will be specified on the day of the talent examination. Next, the applicant will work on a free assignment where he or she will be able to use any media with a compulsory music component. The third task will be a thematic task – a multimedia work project. Details will be specified on the day of the talent examination; the entrance examination also includes a general knowledge test.
