The Studio of Set and Costume Design is conceived as a synthesising path to self-expression, interconnection creation in space, time and situation.
It is thus a controlled path of conceptual thinking and creation, combining contemporary dramatic, artistic and technological means. The synthesis pursues the visual development of thematically bound, literary dramatic, and free thought. The education is structured to include procedures aimed:
towards the acquisition general knowledge in the field of material culture, fine arts, philosophy and theatre as the profiling subject;
to master the artistic means of expression (drawing, painting, graphics, sculpture, installation, action – art, photo, video, light design and work on a computer);
at the analysis and visual transformation of a given topic by the method of association series, at the free processing of topics in a non-interpretative way, using unique and independent forms;
to obtain the necessary technological foundations of stage, costume, exhibition and artistic creation and lighting design.
The synthesis of these procedures and the creative focus of teachers give raise to a studio that is focused not only on classical set and costume design, but also on experimental creation, fashion and design. It also deals with performance, installation, graphics, new media and exhibitions.
The study of set and costume design has two levels. During the three-year bachelor’s degree studies, the student acquires basic skills of independent work at the birth of a performance, learns to analyse a text or topic and creatively process the assigned tasks in the preparation and implementation of the production. He or she then defends the studies with a bachelor’s diploma thesis and a bachelor’s degree artistic performance.
In the following two-year master’s degree studies, the student works independently on personal topics and collaborates on productions realised in the Marta school studio. The master’s degree studies serve to profile the student’s personality as an independent creator and a member of creative production teams.
The Studio of Set and Costume Design strives to connect certain educational programmes with other art-oriented education institution (Faculty of Fine Arts, Brno University of Technology), it diversifies the necessary courses and cooperates with teachers from other fields to enrich the process of education. It participates in domestic and international festivals and exhibitions.
In addition to fulfilling academic tasks, students of the Studio of Set and Costume Design regularly participate in:
studio programmes: Open Days, Scenography Days, PQ, studio exhibitions and events, independent projects and workshops;
university programmes: showcases, performances at the Marta Theatre, International Festival Setkání / Encounter, street theatre, Mask Festival, inter-studio workshops;
programmes beyond the university: seminars and internships, cooperation with other faculties.
The character of the studies at the Studio of Set and Costume Design and their structure and development are determined by the selection of experts who teach the profile subjects in their studios and the focus of their professional activities.
