Vocal Studies Department
The Vocal Studies Department focuses on the training and education of young professional singers. After completing the admission procedure, successful candidates have the opportunity to develop their vocal range and register, as well as their interpretation skills under the guidance of expert teachers. We offer students a wide range of expert subjects and courses that are suitable for the comprehensive development of the overall artistic personality of a singer heading for the opera stage, seeking a spot in a philharmonic choir or pursuing a career in education. In addition to art-oriented subjects, we also emphasise proficiency in various languages – such an essential skill today for employability both at home and abroad. Performing in the Chamber Opera of FoM JAMU forms another part of these studies; the students use their skills in practice and gain valuable experience on an actual theatre stage.
The aim of the Vocal Studies Department is to develop the individual vocal and technical foundations of our students who are admitted to the studies. It aims to teach its graduates the art of constructing a song or an aria and understanding interplay with accompanying instruments. At our department, the acquisition of movement skills is a combined process of synergy between pedagogical guidance in acting and movement education, the outcome of which is a graduate who has mastered not only singing, but also acting and movement – a professional who will be a successful representative of FoM JAMU, an artist who will establish himself or herself as a soloist on one of the opera stages, or as a member of a professional choral ensemble, a concert singer or, last but not least, a quality teacher or educator.
Since its inception, the Vocal Studies Department has educated a number of distinguished singers – professionals on domestic and foreign stages of operas, concerts and concertos alike. Teachers who have worked and continue to work here pass on their artistic experience to the young generation who are just at the beginning of their artistic careers, they develop their technical and interpretation skills and expand their repertoire in the field of concert, chamber and opera production.
The studies are focused on developing the individual technical foundations of successful candidates, improving their breathing technique in order to strengthen their vocal basis, teaching them about mechanisms of phonation, resonance and articulation, as well as correct tone placement. The teaching is aimed at achieving a perfect combination of registers and resonance, neutralisation of vocals, ability to work with dynamics, messa di voce, movement of the voice based on the vocal field and the formation of singer’s overall personality. For the needs of interpretation of all stylistic periods, including music of the 20th and 21st centuries, our listeners have the opportunity to attend various singing courses and masterclasses directly at FoM JAMU.
The Vocal Studies Department offers studies in:
- Master’s degree programme
